If you have never had therapy before, it can be helpful to know a little of what to expect. Psychotherapy and Counselling are for you to talk about anything you wish. We meet weekly in the same place for fifty minutes at the same time each week in my consulting room.
Psychotherapy and Counselling are similar, in that they are talking therapies which allow space for you to communicate your thoughts and feelings. One of the ways they differ is that Psychotherapy is usually an open-ended process whereas Counselling is typically short-term (but can be longer). People tend to know the term Counselling, but may be unfamiliar with the term Psychotherapy. One reason people may need Psychotherapy is to address the deeper issues in their life. By working together we can help you find meaning in your life as well as explore anything that comes up for you. Psychotherapy works by developing a relationship between you and your therapist. I think of it as a shared journey. Therapy can enhance your life, help you gain self-awareness and insight. It can give you a clearer understanding of your thoughts, feelings and ways of behaving. Sharing your story with a therapist, in confidence, can help enormously. |
